It’s New. In April. At MECCA

Words by Kerri Gordon

It might be April Fool's Day, but this month’s beauty launches did not come to fool around. We’re talking celebrity hair secrets, skincare that makes you look like you haven’t lived a day, and all things sparkly - from frosted lip balms to fruit-forward scents. The (beauty) future is bright - and the ultimate antidote to greyer days. Here’s what to shop first.

I need to get this off my chest

If you’ve been reading these for a while, you’d know I typically group our newest arrivals into tight curations of trend or category. This month, however, there are four products that I must talk about, before I can contemplate the rest.

1. It is incredibly difficult for hair that’s been bleached to appear shiny. Not only does its fairer hue not reflect light as well as darker shades, but the dryness caused by processing leaves a more ‘matte’ finish to the hair cuticle. Sydney Sweeney’s hair is a rare exception. Her secret was recently revealed to be Kérastase’s new Blond Absolu Cicagloss Hair Oil, which conveniently lands at MECCA today. There is no logical explanation for how well this product works – you have to try it to believe it.

2. Speaking of the Euphoria star, who’s currently shooting season three of the series, there’s a high chance Half Magic’s new Crystal Butter Lip Balm is on Sydney’s lips as I type. It feels like a balm – buttery, nourishing and not at all gritty – with a sparkly, frosted pay-off, significantly more shimmery than anything else on the market. It’s everything I’ve ever wanted (at age 9, and 29). As some who wears the brand’s Face Gems like it’s business casual; Donni Davy can do no wrong!

3. Being the MECCA oracle for my friends and family, the most common question I receive is “I need an eye cream – which will get rid of my [insert concern here]?”. As of today – and after biting my tongue for a good few months – my answer is the Dr. Dennis Gross DermInfusions™ Fill + Repair Eye Cream. If you’ve tried the serum of the same franchise, you’ll know it’s like a trip to the aesthetician in a bottle. Crows feet? I don’t even know her!

4. Beyonce gave us Cowboy Carter, Chappell; The Giver, Sabrina; a Dolly Parton feature, and D.S. & DURGA; Cowgirl Grass EDP. In the words of Kacey Musgraves, “when I say yee, you say haw!” This is my favourite launch from the brand since Steamed Rainbow EDP earned a permanent spot in my fragrance wardrobe. It pays homage to the original, Cowboy Grass EDP, with rhinestone cowboy sparkle; think lychee, bergamot, geranium and amber.

Fruit salad, yummy yummy

I can’t even begin to describe the all-consuming disappointment that fills my body when April rolls around and all the juicy, delectable stone fruit is replaced with apples, bananas and oranges. It’s a sign of dismal times. Thanks to some new beauty out of the northern hemisphere, however, there’s hope.

Apricot: Glossier You Fleur Eau de Parfum is the fourth and latest juice in the brand’s collection of skin-enhancing scents, and has potential to contend the success of the original with apricot skin, ylang ylang, osmanthus and interestingly, salt.

Fig: Sol de Janeiro’s new Dança Mística Perfume Mist might be my favourite of their mists so far – the brand’s signature sweetness (this time vanilla and lily of the valley) is spruced up with a deliciously green fig note.

Plum: Not a fragrance, but a flavour! Gisou has dropped their viral Honey Infused Lip Oil in a new ‘Glazed Plum’ varietal. It’s not the deep purple shade you might expect, but a perfect pinky-nudey shimmer.

Papaya: Youth To The People’s Cali-born range of superfood-powered skincare lands on our shelves today, and while the TikTok viral Superfood Cleanser is perhaps the most hotly anticipated, let’s not overlook the Superberry Hydrate + Glow Dream Mask; a miraculous overnight mask that transforms dull skin into a plumper, brighter, glowier complexion by morning.

Peach and raspberry: Maison Francis Kurkdjian’s latest masterpiece, Kurky Eau de Parfum, is designed to awaken your inner child – and a scent I would have never expected from a luxury fragrance house. Kurky is as gourmand as it comes, with a nostalgic ‘gummy candy’ note.

Quick!

I’ve run out of word count, but you deserve to know that…

Too Faced Ribbon Wrapped Lash Mascara is creating a new genre of tubing mascara that nails non-smudging reliability with big lash drama.

The kit: Good Night Pillow Mist makes you feel like you’re sleeping in a 5-star hotel every night. Keep a stash in a cupboard somewhere: it makes for the best host gift.

If you’re looking for no-fuss skin basics, the Clinique Moisture Surge™ Active Glow Serum is the latest one-and-done formulation to hydrate, exfoliate, brighten and add glow in a single sweep, and MECCA COSMETICA’s new Gel Cream is the cream for people who hate the feeling of anything on their skin (but are in desperate need of hydration). Also, the Eve Lom Cleanser is turning 40 (!) and to celebrate, they're releasing a 40th Anniversary Collector’s Edition of the MECCA Beauty Election finalist.
