This October the work of the 2024 recipient, Dutch designer Christien Meindertsma, will be unveiled at NGV International in the form of larger-than-life lamb sculpture with a profound message on waste, and how waste can be the beginning of something new.
The Dutch designer is on a mission to revolutionise how we use waste with circular design and technology that repurposes waste that would otherwise be disposed of. For the 2024 Commission, Meindertsma has produced her most ambitious work to date with the creation of a 3D printed lamb made entirely out of European wool that was destined for waste. Through this sculptural work, Meindertsma explores 20 years of wool and raw materials research, the industrial systems behind them, and how technology can be harnessed to positively disrupt the life cycle products.
Watch as we visit her at home in the Netherlands and see how she, together with Tools for Technology, has developed the 'wobot’ – a new tool for working with wool that turns this ancient material into something completely revolutionary that changes the way we understand the value of waste.
To celebrate the opening of the 2024 MECCA x NGV: Women in Design Commission, designer Christien Meindertsma will be in conversation with NGV Curators of Contemporary Design and Architecture, Simone LeAmon and Gemma Savio. Book a spot here, or visit the exhibition when it opens to the public from 2 October 2024 to February 2025.
