Words by Amber Kallor

Get the inside scoop on Hollywood’s biggest beauty happenings in 'Dispatch From Los Angeles', where seasoned journalist Amber Kallor talks to the A-list pros and tastemakers setting the trends.

“If you examine every decade of makeup trends, the brows are always era-defining,” says celebrity makeup artist Sofia Tilbury. Silent film stars like Anna May Wong sported thin, expressive arches during the Roaring ’20s; Audrey Hepburn’s blocky brows enraptured audiences in the ’50s and ’60s; disco queen Donna Summer opted for slender curves in the ’70s; and ’80s beauty Brooke Shields made bushy brows her signature. Then, an entire generation plucked their eyebrows into oblivion in order to imitate ’90s supermodels like Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell, while crisp, clean arches flooded social media feeds in the 2010s thanks to the Kardashians and their brow guru Anastasia Soare, CEO of Anastasia Beverly Hills.

As an elder Millennial, I fell victim to ‘tadpole’ brows in an attempt to emulate early aughts icons like Christina Aguilera and Avril Lavigne. Now, much to my surprise, the skinny strips of hair I spent decades regretting and regrowing are back on the scene – along with a myriad of other options ranging from full and feathery to lifted and laminated.

“In previous years, it seemed like there was an ideal version of what an eyebrow should look like, but now it all depends on what you prefer,” says Steve Kassajikian, Head of Global Artistry at Urban Decay.

Arches have also become the main focus of a makeup look “rather than an afterthought or an extra,” notes Tilbury. “People are starting to understand the power of a brow.”

Zendaya, Tyla and Doja Cat exemplified the trend at this year’s Met Gala and eye-catching arches stole the spotlight at couture shows like at Maison Margiela, Jean Paul Gaultier and Armani Privé. “When brows are expertly shaped, they tie all other features together, making the face feel balanced, lifted, rested and even more youthful,” says Soare.

TAKE SHAPE

“Invest in high-quality scissors and slant-tipped tweezers,” says Soare of her brow-grooming essentials. Pulling a few stray hairs that are clearly out of line can make a big difference, but be careful not to pluck too much on top to avoid thinning out arches, notes Kassajikian.

BALANCE BROWS

Soare, whose patented technique is based on the Golden Ratio (a mathematical formula adopted by artistic luminaries like Leonardo da Vinci), suggests using three simple measurements to create perfectly proportioned arches: “Brows should begin directly above the middle of your nostrils and end where the corner of the nostril connects with the outer corner of the eye,” she explains. “The highest point of the arch should connect the middle of the tip of the nose with the middle of the iris.”

MEET YOUR MATCH

Tilbury recommends reaching for a pencil that’s one shade lighter than your natural brow hair to create the illusion of fullness, while Kassajikian prefers using a product that’s an exact match to add shape and definition. The five foolproof colours he keeps in his kit: taupe for blondes, medium brown for light brunettes, dark brown for deeper brunettes, auburn for redheads, and black. This one from Kosas is great for creating small hair-like strokes.

FILL AND FLUFF

Begin by brushing brows up. “This allows you to see where you have sparse spots that need to be filled,” says Kassajikian. (If your brow hair is super straight or curly, use a strong-hold formula like Urban Decay Slick Day or MECCA MAX BROW GURU Power Brow Strong Hold Gel to lock arches in an upward position.) Next, create short, feathery strokes with a pencil, powder, or pomade that start at the base of the brow and follow the direction of the hair growth. Blend the colour and soften harsh lines with a spoolie. As a finishing touch, Tilbury adds texture with tinted brow mascara and sets the shape with clear gel.

SAFELY EXPERIMENT

“Avoid anything that threatens to damage the hair follicle, including over-tweezing and harsh chemicals,” warns Soare. For a pop of pigment, use a spoolie to coat brows in concealer and top with colourful eyeshadow; bedazzle arches by applying rhinestones or pearls with lash glue; layer on glitter liner for high shine; or shave in add an eyebrow slit like Tyla and model Iris Law. “Hair grows back faster if you don’t pull it out from the root,” says Kassajikian. To try the skinny brow trend without erasing arches, he suggests slicking hairs down with a washable glue stick. Follow with concealer and powder before sketching a pencil-thin arch.
