If you’ve ever wished you had a direct line to a beauty insider who could tell you exactly what you need, what’s new and what’s next – this is it! From the MECCA HQ group chat this week: our resident ‘mist-er’ has unearthed a refreshing new trend, our verdict on the new Diptyque drop and the best mascaras at MECCA right now.
The next big beauty trend
We’re looking into our beauty crystal ball, and word has it the next big thing in skin is: layering face mists. According to Tara, MECCA’s Head of Content and co-host of MECCA Talks: The Mini podcast, this is game-changing for lasting hydration, luminosity and to keep your makeup from slipping and sliding off your face.
Try a few spritzes of Tower 28’s SOS Daily Rescue Facial Spray, wait until dry, then go in with a hydrating mist like the 111SKIN Rose Gold Radiance Face Mist (which feels like pure heaven). Follow with a makeup setting mist (we love Charlotte Tilbury’s Airbrush Flawless Setting Spray or NARS’ new Light Reflecting™ Makeup Setting Mist) before you apply your foundation or base. You won’t believe the glow!
Scents you’ll want to collect
We’ve been holding our breath for Diptyque’s premium collection, and it’s even better than we imagined. Les Essences de Diptyque is a limited release of five scents inspired by natural elements, with a significantly higher concentration (meaning a longer-lasting scent trail) as well as a new flask-shaped bottle with illustrations by Irish artist Nigel Peake. Of the five, I was immediately drawn to Lilyphéa EDP; with a dewy, floral crispness that is said conjure up the iconic scene of Monet’s ‘Water Lilies’ series, to me, it’s so effortlessly chic and bouncy and fresh, it’s how I imagine a female protagonist from a Nancy Meyers film might smell.
MECCA HQ’s favourite mascaras
Never underestimate the power of a good mascara. From the ones that can withstand a run around Melbourne’s The Tan to the magic wands for instant volume, MECCA HQ has spoken – these are the ones we’ll never be without.
First up: Charlotte Tilbury’s Exaggereyes for the ability to make even the shortest lashes look like they’re extensions. Next, Too Faced’s Better Than Sex Volumizing Mascara for dramatic volume in a single swipe. Then, Kevyn Aucoin’s The Curling Mascara for noticeable definition and curl, in a no-mess tubing formula (it slides right off with warm water) and ILIA’s Limitless Lash Mascara for the nifty dual-sided brush that catches every single lash. Finally, MECCA MAX’s Wink Ink Super Mascara for an instant (and flake-free) lash-lift effect.
Make your fragrance mist last
Light, refreshing and seriously addictive, I find it almost impossible to stop constantly reaching for the fragrance mist in my bag. I wanted to know if there was a way to make them last longer without just spraying more, so I put the question to the group chat. Turns out there are a few options…
Start by spritzing your favourite mist on moisturised skin; we'll be dousing ourselves in MECCA MAX's OPTIMIST Energising Fragrance Mist, which will leaving you feeling 'straight out of the shower' fresh with its blend of cucumber, melon and freshly cut greens. Or try layering your favourite body product with its complementary fragrance – case in point, Sol de Janeiro’s Brazilian Bum Bum Cream with the Brazilian Crush Cheirosa 62 Perfume Mist, which will leave you smelling like a cocktail of pistachio, almond and salted caramel all day.
Next, spray your hair as well as your skin – hair fibres are porous and love to slurp up moisture, making them the perfect canvas for scent (more on that here). Or, try a hair mist – which have added ingredients to boost shine as well as scent your hair. Some of my personal favourites are: Gisou’s Honey Infused Hair Perfume, Diptyque’s Fleur de Peau Hair Mist and Byredo’s Mojave Ghost Hair Perfume.
The pore, the merrier
A shout-out to the MVP of my current everyday makeup routine – Polite Society’s new Perfect Powder Pore Minimizing Powders. Easily my most-used product throughout the day, I keep one stashed in my handbag and pull it out to mop up the oil-slick on my T-zone come 3pm. This powder is so fine, it melts effortlessly into skin, blurring pores without looking caky or dry.
Plus, nothing will (ever) dull our sparkle
We’re hot on the heels of party season and we’re predicting the return of disco eyes, starring Half Magic, of course! Try it with a touch of metallic shadow in the inner corners of your eyes or a sleek line drawn along the upper lash line. And don’t forget the glitter! More inspiration from the queen of the statement eye (and Half Magic founder) Donni Davy here.
